ESA letter renewal: ask what needs to be updated
Separate clinical reevaluation, a housing request for current information and an optional recurring purchase before ordering a new ESA letter.

Find the source of the renewal question
ESA letter renewal can mean a new assessment, an updated document or a recurring purchase, so establish which process the reminder refers to. “Your ESA letter is expiring” can refer to different things: a clinician's reassessment policy, a housing reviewer's request or a seller's recurring product. Identify which applies before ordering another document.
This guide does not establish one nationwide calendar deadline for every letter. Read the applicable rules and the actual request. A subscription's anniversary is not, by itself, a legal finding that your housing documentation has become unusable.
Ask the clinician what has changed
If the professional recommends follow-up, ask what the appointment is intended to assess and whether documentation will be considered as part of it. Describe changes in your circumstances, living arrangement or animal's role honestly.
Tell the practice if you have moved or will be in another state during an online appointment. HHS's interstate licensure guidance explains why the proposed location and permitted practice pathway need attention. Do not assume the arrangements from a previous appointment carry over unchanged.
Clarify a housing reviewer's request
Ask what information needs updating and why. There may be an administrative mismatch, a new animal, a different accommodation request or a specific concern that a newly dated version alone would not answer.
Local requirements can differ. For example, NYC's CCHR fact sheet warns against rigid documentation conditions, including requiring a date within a fixed time of the request. That local example should prompt a careful source check, not a blanket claim about every jurisdiction.
Review automatic billing separately
ESA Pet's terms describe optional annual subscriptions that renew until canceled. Check the product you actually selected, the next charge date and the current cancellation process. Read the separate refund policy for any timing conditions rather than assuming a general cancellation sentence guarantees a refund.
Save the cancellation confirmation. If you are requesting a clinical update through another professional, canceling a commercial subscription may be an entirely separate action. Do not assume one conversation automatically changes the other arrangement.
Prepare an update record
- Who asked for the update and when?
- What information or circumstance has changed?
- What appointment or document work is proposed?
- What is the quoted fee?
- Is a recurring charge scheduled independently?
- How will a corrected or updated document be submitted?
Keep the prior documentation and the new version labeled clearly. If an issuer corrects an error, record the correction rather than presenting conflicting versions without explanation.
Ask what is being renewed
Does an ESA letter expire? Separate the document’s date and stated purpose from a provider’s subscription rules and a recipient’s request for current information. How long an ESA letter is good for cannot be established by an advertisement about yearly registration. Emotional support animal renewal may refer to a new evaluation, a membership charge or a certificate product. Ask which service is being offered, why it is needed and whether payment will repeat automatically.
Choose the next step from the reason
A clinical question belongs with the professional. An unclear property request needs clarification from the reviewer or relevant advice. A recurring charge needs a billing decision. Working through the reason can prevent spending money on a document that does not address the actual issue.
If a housing dispute includes a deadline or notice, address that process promptly. Waiting for a renewed letter should not be assumed to pause it.
